Excerpt: Mother and Child

Maureen Fleming's ‘Mother and Child’, ‘The Sphere’ and ‘Nude Descending Stairs’ are poignant studies of the female body and it's relationship to the universal soul's journey. Archetypal and genuine, the work plumbs the depths of human experience, touching the essence of our inner life. The video DVD's, created through a series of performances intended to embody Fleming's original choreography for stage, have been used with Fleming's live performance, depicting co-existing levels of reality. However, ‘Mother and Child’, ‘The Sphere’ and ‘Nude Descending Stairs’ clearly stand alone as motifs of Fleming's unique visual art theater. Created through a creative exchange involving light designer Christopher Odo and videographer Jeff Bush these works have been seen in live performance, art installations and Dance on Camera Festivals.

Video Creation History

Maureen Fleming began creating videos of her choreography in 1984. Her first creation ‘Birth Song’ is a one-camera shoot with no edits, a pattern that has continued throughout the creation of all videos of her work, capturing her unique sculptural choreography. ‘Birth Song’ was created laboriously through a series of full-length performances in Fleming’s studio in collaboration with light designer Christopher Odo. Birth Song, won a commission to create Maureen Fleming’s ‘Axis Mundi’ by Creative Time’s Art on the Beach and also aired on ‘Eye on Dance’ co-produced by Jeff Bush and Celia Ipiotis. Following this presentation, Eye on Dance co-producer Jeff Bush joined Fleming’s creative team in Maureen Fleming Studio for four hours each week on Sunday afternoons beginning in 1991. With Jeff Bush now performing the camera work, Christopher Odo was free to create the lighting simultaneously and adapt the light during the performance, a process replicating the live stage performance. Once a work was completed and presented on stage, video creation began through repetitions of the choreography. This company of artists worked together through a unique artistic exchange. Fleming originated the choreography and directed the video creation of the full length works and had the sole right to copyright the videos embodying full length takes of her original choreography. However, her collaborators created original video and visual design creations involving excerpts of the footage. Jeff Bush has created numerous original videos including The Widening Gyre for the screen involving images from Fleming’s work. Christopher Odo created videos used in his original visual designs for Maureen Fleming evening length collaborative works: After Eros, Decay of the Angel and Waters of Immortality. It was from this process Fleming’s creations ‘The Sphere’ (1994) ‘Mother and Child’ (1996) and ‘The Stairs’ (1997) were created and presented as video representations of Maureen Fleming’s choreography throughout the world. All of these works are still performed live by Maureen Fleming today, often incorporating the videos created through this unique exchange between artists in multimedia presentations.

Fleming Elastics™ DVD and CD

Fleming Elastics™ DVD, created by Maureen Fleming, is a powerful physical training method for movement and vocal production that safely develops flexibility while strengthening the innermost layer of muscles in the body. Developed during Fleming’s 2006 - 2007 Fulbright Commission Residency at the Seoul Institute for the Arts, this groundbreaking method involves an easy to install elastic band, which provides “underwater like” resistance and engages the ligaments, tendons and other connective tissue at the source of the movement, creating a strong base that is necessary for sustainable movement and vocal work.

Stemming from her in depth personal research to overcome a childhood injury, Maureen Fleming shares techniques from her daily practice that maintains the flexibility and strength necessary for her to perform her unique movement vocabulary. Fleming Elastics is accessible to anyone interested in discovering his or her movement potential.
